Where does the shimmer of iridescent glass come from?

The same chandelier appears pink in the morning and golden in the evening: this is the effect of iridescent glass, one of the most spectacular materials in our collection.

How iridescence is created

Iridescence is achieved by exposing hot glass to metallic oxide vapor. A thin film then deposits on its surface, so thin that it doesn't color the glass per se — it deflects light, creating these changing, almost mother-of-pearl reflections.

A material that never repeats itself

Because the effect depends on the viewing angle and ambient light, no two views perceive exactly the same shades at the same time. This is what gives iridescent pieces their lively, almost unpredictable character.

The Italian word that gives it its name

In Italian, it's called "cangiante" glass — literally, changing. This is the name we gave to one of our iridescent disc chandeliers, as a direct tribute to this effect.
